IS MY COUNTRY STILL OF THEE? Wayne D. Leeper
My Country tis of thee, sweet land of Liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim’s pride, From every mountain side, let freedom ring. Our fathers God to Thee, Author of liberty, to Thee we sing. Long may our land be bright, With freedom’s holy light, Protect us by thy might, great God our king. Samuel F. Smith 1832 When he penned those words, Samuel F. Smith was describing the America that he knew and loved and giving voice to his prayer that our land might “long be bright with freedoms holy light.” Most of us learned and sang it as students in school. I don’t know for sure but it is now probably considered to be politically incorrect. Never-the-less, it poses a thought which is at the very heart of the election in November. Millions of Americans are going to the polls to determine if this country is going to continue to enjoy the blessings of our God. Our choice is not between two political parties, but between two competing ideologies for our national existence. The liberal left, in the name of tolerance, is seeking to promote every form of licentiousness and ungodliness ever conceived in the hearts of man, and, if given the opportunity, they will turn our nation into a jungle of unrighteousness, greed and moral decadence unparalleled since the fall of the Roman empire. They will preserve the slaughter of millions of unborn children, while working to destroy millions more through embryonic stem cell research. They will promote the teaching of homosexually in our schools as an acceptable alternative lifestyle while demanding the Bible and any mention of God be banned from the classroom. The family, the institution of marriage and the Bible are under attack as never before in the history of our nation. They will appoint judges who will declare that same sex marriage must be legalized throughout the land, while working to change our national motto from “In God we Trust,” and removing it from our money. They have already gotten the Pledge of Allegiance declared unconstitutional because it contains the word God. The legalization of narcotics and prostitution is also a part of their agenda, as is the fight to preserve and promote every legal form of pornography while working to legalize child pornography as well. There is already an effort underway to reduce the age for sexual consent to twelve years old, which would make pedophilia perfectly legal. The other side, our side, that which they call the “radical religious right” believes, with our founding fathers, that this nation was established with the help of God and has been blessed and prospered by Him for over 228 years. We rightly understand that God cannot continue to bless a nation that will follow the course advocated by the liberal left. Understanding this, our President has drawn a line in the sand and taken a firm and courageous stand against the immorality that would destroy this nation. For this reason he is hated by the liberal left and they will stop at nothing to replace him with a man who has promised to give them the immorality they want. It will not be our President, however, or the liberal left that will decide the kind of nation in which our children and grandchildren must live. It will be us, the Christians of America. We have the numbers to win if we have the desire. Will we vote our pocket book, our view on the war, or a political party, while disregarding the moral and spiritual consequences of such a vote? Or even worse, will we condemn our children and grandchildren to a cesspool of unrighteousness through our indifference and failure to vote at all? It has been said that the only thing necessary for evil to prevail is for the good men to remain silent. Will we remain silent, get back in our church buildings and keep our religious opinions out of the public square as we have been told to? If the Bible teaches anything, it teaches that Christians will stand before God in eternity and give an answer for the things we have done while living on earth. Those of us who believe in a power greater than ourselves have an obligation. Either we will stand and vote for those individuals who will lead this nation to greater morality in the eyes of our Creator, or stand before Him in eternity to explain why we disregarded His teaching, His commands, and His design, by electing persons who would advocate, and vote to support, that which is worldly, ungodly, and profane. God gave us this land that we might use our freedom to spread His gospel from these shores to the entire world. He has blessed us and protected us that we might accomplish His purpose. With our freedom He has given us a charge to keep. What is more, under His inspiration, our founders insured, through our Constitution, that we would have the power of the ballot box to preserve the purpose of our national existence. The decision is now in our hands. Is my country still of thee?
